Panel Discussion: Nilbar Güreş, Alejandra Castro Rioseco
Moderator: Dott. Vittorio Urbani
The position of women in the arts and the related discussions
are not new. But international unrest, conservative change of policies
in many governments worldwide, war crises, encrease of
poverty in the world had put on women's shoulders a weight heavier than
before. The problem of the secondary position allowed to women artists
in the art scene, seems in the current circumstancies a luxury. Nevertheless the fight of women artists
to reach the public they deserve, should be counted among the general quest
of humanity for freedom. In contemporary society the possibility for
artists in general to let their voices to be heard are encreased greatly
by the new social media. These media are affordable, escape censorship, do not require the
power and money allowed by the Art Market to their privileged artists,
which continue to be predominantly male. Is there a
"specificity" in art produced by women? The production of
craft (embroidery, production of baskets, weaving),
traditionally mainly in women's hands, needs to be
reevaluated in its dignity as creative expression and art.
