“Melting Point on the Road” is being presented as a part of the 3rd Istanbul Design Biennial, Parallel Events Programme at the Elgiz Museum
Melting Point, an exhibition by artist and designer Aslı Kutluay and curator Vittorio Urbani, was initially a preview show for early visitors to the Venice Architecture Biennial between April 6th and May 20 th. It was then extended to June 22nd for the “15th Mostra Internazionale di Architettura – Biennale di Venezia” and opened at the Magazzino Gallery in Palazzo Contarini Polignac on the Grand Canal, one of the most important Early Renaissance buildings in Venice.
In its second iteration ‘Melting Point on the Road’ team expands and curator, Vittorio Urbani has now brought in art historian Alessandro Fiorentino and Archeologist Emma Capurso as co-curators. The latest version of Melting Point travelled south to the Puglia region of Italy for an exhibition at the Masseria Jesce, a historic building by the patronage of Altamura Culture Agency and Puglia Promotion Office in Altamura City which ran from August 9 – 28th.
Melting Point makes its third stop at the Istanbul Design Biennial Parallel Events Programme at Elgiz Museum from 25th October to December 4th and will present an optimistic new version of the exhibition.
For this third iteration Aslı Kutuluay has produced a coherent body of new works which are “non-functional” pieces of furniture intending to create a connection among the artworks, site and visitors. These works, which are reflections on the phenomenon of Global Warming, show structures at the point of melting or cracking and present us with disturbing scenarios as if we have found ourselves in a magic mirror. We humans are responsible for these changes. However, in this iteration we see a shift in the artist’s attitude. The use of yellow light here rather than red in the previous version signals a shift from ego and destruction to that of optimism and promise.
Prior to the opening of the exhibition there will be the panel discussion entitled “Art and Design: Problems of Aesthetics and Management”.
