Exhibition Opening 31 October 2016

Exhibition Dates: 31 October 2016 - 18 March 2017

The Elgiz Museum will present 2 important works by the veteran artist Rahmi Aksungur, who has made significant contributions to the development of contemporary Turkish sculpture as a sculptor and academic, and 14 works from the Elgiz Collection, Yıldız Holding, Mustafa Balcı, Çağla Cabaoğlu, Haydar Halit Cenkeri, Kemal Servi and Cengiz Akıncı Collections.

As Jonathan Bastable stated in his interview with Jonathan Bastable, the common point of many of these works is that they are objects from everyday life. Some of them are a red apple, a green pepper, a yellow leaf or a fish... When Aksungur is asked ‘Why fish?’, he says that art in general is tired of intellectual approaches and therefore he chooses objects from everyday life. Although they are from daily life, the scales of the artist's objects have been changed. Because according to Aksungur, the critical point in sculpture is mass. This choice draws the viewer's attention to the gigantic ‘apple’, ‘fish’ or ‘pepper’ whose mass has been changed, and this leads to a focus on the work.

Standing in front of a sculpture the size of a large boulder creates the feeling of looking at these everyday objects in an extremely close-up, almost through binoculars. This enormity causes you to focus and concentrate your attention. In addition to this, an Aksungur work exhibited on a pedestal takes on a meaning other than the object it represents. A fish or fruit sculpture of this scale creates the effect of a monument, a monument, and makes you think that the reason for the existence of a sculpture is to glorify the object it represents, to emphasise its importance.

Curated by Haşim Nur Gürel, the exhibition can be visited at the Elgiz Museum between 31 October 2016 and 18 March 2017.
