Mytilene Municipality Art Gallery, Halim Bey Mansion, Greece

The exhibition Transition Lines (in medias res) aims to show the diversity of connections between narratives, memories and expressions of different intensities, with different approaches, through selected works from the Elgiz Permanent Collection. Developed since 1980 by Sevda and Can Elgiz and focusing on the ‘contemporary’ in art and life, this collection was made accessible to the public with the establishment of the Elgiz Museum in Istanbul in 2001.

Curated by Başak Şenova, the exhibition Transition Lines (in medias res) aims to create a constellation on memory and perception based on this collection. The ‘encounters’ between the works and the spaces where the exhibition Transition Lines (in medias res) will take place indicate an ever-changing dynamic of reading the works. The aim is for the viewer to look at this constellation of personal narratives, realisations, psychological and cognitive definitions from different angles. This exhibition, which encompasses cross-sections of the narratives in the works that feed the foundation of the collection, proposes different ways of reading both through its spatial construction and through the dialogues it attempts to establish with geographies laden with historical and political weight. Each work in the exhibition is connected to the others through the middle of their non-linear narratives (in medias res), either through their form or their content.

The first stop on the route of the exhibition Transition Lines (in medias res) will be the Municipal Art Gallery of Mytilene on the Greek island of Lesbos. This building, one of the examples of Ottoman architecture on the island, is known as the Halim Bey Mansion. However, it is important to underline an emotional connection with this venue at the first stop:

Can Elgiz's great-grandfather Halim Bey was born and lived in this mansion. The exhibition aims to add new lines of passage and pathways to the narratives that are present and embedded in the story of the mansion.

Spanning the entire mansion, the exhibition presents works by leading artists in a variety of media, including painting, sculpture, installation, object, photography, film and video. These artists include Pınar Yolaҫan, Oleg Dou, Cindy Sherman, Azade Köker, Bedri Baykam, Bengü Karaduman, Ferhat Özgür, Gilbert & George, Hale Tenger, Tracey Emin, Mateo Mate, Burak Delier, Gülsün Karamustafa, İhsan Oturmak, Kendell Geers, Komet, Nan Goldin, Nilbar Güreş, Özlem Günyol, Rebecca Horn, Tomur Atagök, Veljko Zejak, Ola Kolehmainen, Hera Büyüktaşçıyan and Benji Boyadgian.

A book, edited by Başak Şenova, documenting the course of the exhibition will accompany the exhibition and will be published in three languages (Turkish, Greek and English) during the exhibition.
