Andrew Rogers: – Winding Roads – The Search for Truth

Exhibitions

A unique event at the museum: Australian artist Andrew Rogers, together with his Istanbul guests, created a temporary labyrinth on the terrace of the museum.

Rogers' land art project titled “Winding Paths - In Search of Truth” was on display in the 1500 m2 open-air exhibition space above the Elgiz Museum. The installation of this project took place 3 days before the opening on April 18th with the participation of neighbors and students.

The question that the artist focuses on is; “If we care about our world, what criteria should we prioritize?” This is how he explains his quest; The labyrinth titled “The Winding Roads - In Search of Truth” is not focused on a structure, but on an idea. The project emphasizes the importance of a point of view; as stewards we have a responsibility to those around us and those who come after us. Just as we take over the environmental consequences that we inherit, we also leave certain formations to those who come after us. We will witness the repercussions of the present in the future. We are all connected to each other through people, location, time and space.”

The artist's short-lived stone labyrinth on display at the Elgiz Museum is a replica of the world's deepest gorge, the Kaligandaki Valley Gorge near Jomsom in Nepal. The labyrinth there overlooks the sacred snow-capped Mount Nilgiri, which stands 7000 meters above sea level. Juxtaposed with the sacred Kaligandaki River, it is a beautiful and pristine site on the face of the earth. In April 2008, Rogers built the labyrinth with 450 local people.

Simultaneously with the land art project, the museum's former Project Rooms (Mezzanine) exhibited photographs from the world's largest contemporary land art project, Time and Space: The Rhythms of Life, a series of 48 stone works created over 14 years, in 13 countries, on 7 continents, with 6700 people.
